MURRAY MOVING CLOSER TO WORLD GLORY
UNBEATEN Hatton Promotions
middleweight star Martin Murray will make the first defence of his
Commonwealth title next month.
Murray will put his crown on the line
at Wigan's Robin Park Arena on Saturday June 18. His challenger
will be named next week.
The St Helens ace, 28, already holds
the WBA inter-continental crown and is ranked fifth in the
prestigious organisation's world rankings.
Murray who has won all 22 professional
fights gave one of his best performances at Manchester's MEN Arena
last month knocking out John Carvalho in four rounds.
Hatton Promotions President Ricky
Hatton said: "There is no doubt that Martin's world title chance
will come with the WBA.
"I believe we will deliver that
opportunity next year provided Martin keeps his side of the bargain
and keeps winning.
"The middleweight division is
competitive and in Britain alone Darren Barker and Matthew Macklin
are proving themselves at the highest level.
"I honestly believe that Martin is the
best 160lb fighter in Britain right now and will prove that when he
gets the chance.
"Macklin and Barker are great fighters
and great lads, but I would match Martin against them
tomorrow."
Hatton Promotions Director of Boxing
Richard Poxon is currently looking at the list of official
Commonwealth contenders, but Hatton promised: "Martin will have a
proper test."
He won the title last July,
outpointing Australian Peter Mitrevski Jr.
The bill will be televised live on Sky
Sports and among the galaxy of Hatton Promotions prospects on the
undercard including Olympic star Joe Murray.
