Robert Guerrero won the interim WBC welterweight title and moved
a step closer to a fight with the likes of Floyd Mayweather and
Manny Pacquiao at the HP Pavillion in San Jose, California on
Saturday night with a unanimous decision over Selcuk Aydin.
After 15 months out of action, "The Ghost" prevailed by judges
scores of 117-111 and 116-112 (twice) but Aydin, a Turk now
fighting out of Germany, proved a tough foe.
Overall, Guerrero threw and landed more punches and deserved his
30th career victory. Aydin, however, fought like his
"mini-Tyson" monikor and tested Guerrero's chin with hard hooks in
several rounds.
"He's a strong guy," Guerrero said, afterwards. "I want to
take on the best and that's why we challenged him. It's my
first fight back in a year and I took care of business.
"I believe in my talents and my skills. I stood with him a
little too long, but I'm a fighter. Now you know I can take a shot
at the welterweight division. Floyd Mayweather, you want this
belt, its right here. Come and get it. "
Aydin, said: "I think I did wrong, not the judges. I could
not do what I wanted to do. It's my mistake, I blame it on
me. After the fourth round something happened with me. I
saw double and I don't know why, but there's no excuse - I
lost."
On the undercard Shawn Porter defeated Alfonso Gomez on
points.
