Liverpool light-welter Tom Stalker had to overcome some
difficult moments before seeing off India's Manoj Kumar to book his
place in the quarter-finals.
Stalker, who had received a bye from the previous round, took
the fight by 20 points to 16 but had to hold as he tired in the
closing stages.
Indeed, the Team GB hope was made to pay for his fast start in
the final round as he tired and almost saw his seven point lead
pegged back.
"I can improve a lot. I felt like I was staying there and
fighting too much, rather than hitting and moving," he said
afterwards.
"My next bout I'll be a lot better. If I want to win the gold
medal there's got to be a lot more to come.
"After having over a week in the village I didn't feel 100 per
cent sharp. But the fans got me through it - I'd like to thank
every single one of them for such amazing support."
He will now face Munkh-Erdene Uranchimeg of Mongolia - the world
number two.
