It has emerged that Julio Cesar Chavez Jnr failed a drugs test
after losing his WBC middleweight crown to Sergio Martinez at the
weekend.
The Mexican, who is the son of the legendary multiple weight
world champ of the same name, gave a post-fight urine sample which
tested positive for marijuana.
While not a performance enhancing drug, it is on the banned
substance list.
"The commission let Top Rank's Carl Moretti know that he
tested positive," promoter Bob Arum told ESPN.com.
"I can't really get excited about it. There's no promoter in
boxing who could pass the marijuana test, including myself.
"Julio is going to have to explain to the commission what
happened and the commission will be guided accordingly. If there
was a trace of marijuana, to me, it's not the same as using a
performance-enhancing drug. That is cheating."
Chavez Jnr almost retained his title in spectacular fashion when
he dropped Martinez in the 12th round, but he couldn't
finished the job and lost a wide unanimous decision.
