The career of Mexican legend Erik Morales looks to be over after
WBC and WBA light-welterweight champion Danny Garcia knocked out in
Brooklyn, New York last night.
Morales, a four-weight world titlist, had been competitive when
the pair met in March this year.
But here, except for in a close opening round, he was
comprehensively outgunned by the unbeaten Philadelphian.
Garcia, fresh off his KO victory over Britain's Amir Khan,
rocked Morales down to his boots with an hellacious right hand
close to the end of the third session.
And a huge left hook to the jaw finished things a round
later.
Like against Khan, Garcia threw a shot that came around Morales'
blind side and almost sent him spinning 360 degrees before he
crashed into the lower ropes.
With the Mexican unlikely to be able to get back to his feet,
the fight was immediately waved off.
In truth, Morales was lucky to even be allowed to box the
25-year-old champion.
He failed two random drugs tests for clenbuterol, a substance
which appears on WADA's banned list, before passing a negative test
in the run up to the fight. He has blamed the failed tests on
tainted meats.
The victory took Garcia's ledger to 25 - 0 (16 KOs).
