Richard Schaefer has set his sights on signing Olympic
super-heavyweight gold medallist Anthony Joshua.
Speaking at this week's press conference to promote Amir Khan's
clash with Carlos Molina, he said that the Londoner is exactly the
kind of fighter Golden Boy Promotions is looking to add to its
European stable.
"Joshua is a terrific fighter. He is the total package and I
think he is going to have an opportunity to eventually become the
heavyweight champion of the world," Schaefer stated.
"We currently have the Klitschko brothers dominating, but in my
opinion they are more the champions of Europe.
"They have totally failed to capture the US market and I think
Joshua, with his style and personality, has the opportunity to
become the standard for boxing.
"He can bring the general market back to the heavyweight
division and has tremendous, tremendous potential.
"We are always interested to work with the biggest names in the
sport, whether they are established or emerging, and believe we
have the best platform to really make fighters crossover
stars.
"The division is in a chokehold by Vitali and Wladimir Klitschko
- and I don't mean that with any disrespect to them. There is
nobody who can beat those guys.
"But from a marketing point of view, they should be much
bigger.
"The make maybe $8million from every fight but then you look at
someone like Floyd Mayweather who has the potential to make up to
$50m.
"Joshua can really relight the fire in the heavyweight
division."
Currently Joshua, 22, is planning on staying in the amateur set
up and is focusing on the Commonwealth Games in 2014, but money
talks in this sport and Golden Boy have deep enough pockets to sign
almost anyone.
