After spending large portions of
2012 preparing Stevie Williams for an ill-fated British title shot,
Liverpool's Dave Tonks has had to endure numerous bad spells as his
charge's misfortune has saw two Lonsdale lifelines fall short at
the last possible moment.
Luckily for Tonks, not all is
grey, as time spent away from nurturing Williams has saw the
veteran trainer develop the latest star to roll off the famed
Liverpool boxing conveyor belt.
Anthony Jevons may not be a
familiar name to those outside the gloried Merseyside fight
boundaries but Tonks is insistent that's about to change as the
popular youngster makes his professional bow this Friday evening on
Dave Coldwell's Manchester bill.
After inking a promotional deal
with the fast-rising Yorkshire promoter in June, Jevons immediately
set up stall at Tonk's V02 gym and early reports from the likeable
tutor are very impressive.
"I've known 'Jevvo' since he
first started boxing and he's a boxer that has impressed me every
time I've watched him," praised Tonks.
"As an amateur I expected so much
more from him but for one reason or another he never pushed on and
got the rewards his talent deserved.
"Since he's come to me, his
attitude has been first class and it's exactly what I need for him.
Turning pro has given him a new challenge and he's learning new
stuff all the time.
"He's settled into our place like
he's been here for years and you can tell he's enjoying every
single moment here.
"He's sparring with good kids all
the time and the adjustments and improvements he's made since day
one have been unbelievable.
"He's got a good team around him
in terms of training and promoting and I'm looking forward to what
Dave [Coldwell] has got planned for him. Coldwell Boxing is on the
verge of big things and I'm happy that myself and "Jevvo" can be a
part of it."
