Antonio Tarver

Former world light-heavyweight champion Antonio Tarver is targeting a shot at the heavyweight crown.

The Floridian, who recently turned 45, returns to action against club fight Mike Sheppard tomorrow evening (Tuesday November 26) and is keen to make a statement in boxing's heaviest weight classification.

Tarver, a star of the sixth Rocky movie, has been out of the ring since his cruiserweight clash with Lateef Kayode in June last year due to testing positive for the anabolic steroid drostanolone.

"I wanted to go to heavyweight because if I was going to make my return, it had to be for something bigger than me. I had to set a goal and I want to become heavyweight champion," Tarver told Espn.com.

"It gives me something to come back for, something to reach for, gives me a mountain I can climb. That's when I'm at my best -- when I feel my back is against the wall and I am the only one that thinks I can do it. I have to have the mindset and spirit to get it done."

Despite his hopes, it seems unlikely that he'll be challenging the likes of the Klitschko brothers any time soon.
